These Cheerios bars are a great party food, especially if it’s for kids. The colorful candies add such a nice festive touch the little ones will love. Plus it’s a great treat that does well in bake sales.

Peanut Butter Cheerio Bars

This time, I used regular Cheerios, but it’s also delicious with Honey Nut Cheerios. Of course, the results will be sweeter, but that’s a good thing, right?

After making various Rice Krispie Treats, I thought it would be fun to make something with a different cereal mixture. If you have a box of Cheerios, you’re already off to a great start!

Although I probably wouldn’t give these to my children or grandchildren for breakfast every morning, it’s a fun breakfast food for sleepovers and other special occasions. Offer it with a variety of other breakfast foods, including sausage patties, crispy bacon, fruit and yogurt parfaits, and eggs.

Ingredients

There’s a good chance you have the ingredients to make this yummy recipe. Check your pantry before you go to the store for any of it.

Here is what you’ll need to make them the way I have them here:

  • Cheerios
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Creamy peanut butter
  • Regular M&Ms
  • Butter

For exact measurements of each ingredient and full directions, go to the recipe card at the bottom of the page. You can even print out the card by using the “print” button.

You can swap out some of the ingredients or add other things to this simple recipe. In fact, some of the M&Ms fell off the top of these bars, so I drizzled some light corn syrup over the top in those places. You can also melt more marshmallows and use the gooey mixture to stick the M&Ms back on.

Here are some other things you can add:

  • Dark or milk chocolate chips
  • White chocolate chips
  • Almond butter (in place of the peanut butter)
  • Fruity Pebbles
  • Pretzel pieces
  • Chocolate candies
  • Any of your favorite candies
  • Brown sugar
  • Vanilla extract
  • Reeses Pieces

Preparation

Spray a 7” x 11” or 8” x 8” pan with non stick spray. Normally, I use an 8 inch square baking dish, but this time I used a rectangular one. You can use a greased 13-in pan if you double the recipe.

Set it aside while you get everything else ready.

You’ll also need a large bowl (large microwave-safe bowl), a spoon, and a spatula.

How to Make M&M Cheerio Bars

Combine the butter and marshmallows in the large bowl.

Microwave this until both ingredients are melted.

Stir until they are smooth and blended.

Next, add the peanut butter and stir the mixture until it is well blended.

Carefully fold in the Cheerios until they are coated. Add the M&Ms and fold them into the mixture. Even though I was careful, I still broke a couple of the M&Ms, but that’s okay. It’s still good.

Using a spatula, spread the mixture into the greased pan. Since the Cheerio and sugar mixture is so sticky, you may want to spray the spatula with nonstick cooking spray first.

M&M Cheerio mixture pressed into a pan

With greased hands or with the back of the spatula, gently press the mixture until it is even. Try not to crush the Cheerios. But if a few of them break, that’s okay.

Now it’s time to let it set. You can either put it in the refrigerator for a half hour or allow it to set at room temperature for an hour.

With a greased knife, cut it into square or rectangular bars. I typically get 15 or 16 bars out of this easy recipe.
