Ingredients

There are so many different ways to make a tuna melt, and I’ve tried many of them. This list of ingredients delivers my favorite version. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Canned tuna, drained
  • Chopped onion
  • Chopped celery
  • Mayonnaise
  • Lemon juice
  • Slices of bread
  • Shredded cheese
  • Butter

Note: If you want a hint of tart flavor, add about 1/3 cup of dill pickle relish.

Also feel free to use different types of bread and cheeses. Add slices of tomato, fresh from the garden. You can even add some of your favorite seasonings to the mixture.

Directions

In a medium bowl, mix the tuna, chopped onion, chopped celery, mayonnaise, and lemon juice. Stir until well combined. This mixture should be creamy but still have some texture from the veggies.

Lay out four slices of your chosen bread. On two of the slices, evenly sprinkle the shredded cheese.

Divide the tuna mixture between the two cheese-covered slices, spreading evenly. Top each with the remaining slices of bread to make two closed sandwiches.

Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat until melted and slightly bubbling.

Carefully place the sandwiches in the skillet. Cook for about 3 minutes, pressing down slightly with a spatula to ensure even browning.

Flip the sandwiches carefully and cook the other side for another 3 to 4 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted.

Remove from the skillet, let rest for a minute, then slice and serve.

Home-Cooked Favorite

There’s a reason that tuna melts have been a favorite sandwich for years. They’re the perfect blend of pantry-friendly dishes. The first time I made one, I couldn’t believe how simple something so delicious could be.

I like to serve tuna melt sandwiches with some of our favorite sides such as corn tortilla chips, my mother’s potato salad, or even a colorful garden salad. Or you can add a hint of sweetness with these delicious sweet potato chips.
