When you’re looking for a simple, comforting meal that’s perfect for a cozy dinner at home, make this delicious casserole. I love how this dish combines pantry staples into a delightful, hearty meal that’s easy to prepare and even easier to enjoy.
Filling, Delicious, and Inexpensive
Whether you make a tuna casserole from ingredients you picked up on sale or this beef shop-the-pantry casserole from items in your pantry, you won’t have to go hungry. I like to add other seasonings to change things up every now and then.
Ingredients
- 1-1/2 cups uncooked shell pasta
- One 5-ounce can tuna, drained
- One 10.5-ounce can condensed cream of mushroom soup (or any cream soup you prefer)
- One 8.5-ounce can green peas, drained
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 cup crunchy topping (optional – panko, breadcrumbs, crushed potato chips, etc.)
Directions
Preheat and Prep. Begin by preheating your oven to 350˚ F. Grease the bottom of a 7” x 11” baking pan to ensure easy cleanup and prevent sticking.
Cook the Pasta. Cook the pasta to al dente according to the directions on the package. This usually takes around 8-10 minutes. Cooking it al dente helps maintain a pleasant texture once the casserole is baked.
Mix the Filling. While the pasta is cooking, take a large bowl and combine the drained tuna, condensed cream of mushroom soup, drained green peas, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix until everything is evenly incorporated. The Worcestershire sauce adds a subtle tangy depth to the creamy mixture, making the casserole more flavorful.
Assemble the Casserole. Once the pasta is done, drain it and pour it into the greased baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Pour the tuna and soup mixture over the pasta, spreading it to cover the pasta completely.
If you’re a fan of a crispy, crunchy top layer, now is the time to sprinkle your choice of panko, breadcrumbs, or crushed potato chips evenly over the top. I normally use crushed potato chips. However, this time I used a small amount of panko.
Bake. Place the assembled casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes or until the mixture is bubbly and the top is golden brown. The bubbling ensures that the casserole is heated through and the flavors meld together.
Serve Hot. Once baked, remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. This allows the sauce to thicken slightly, making it easier to serve.
