This creamy lime smoothie recipe is perfect for any time when you want something deliciously refreshing and nutritious. It has a delightful blend of tart and sweet, so it’s satisfying on so many levels.
Before I create new smoothie recipes, I look in my refrigerator and see what all would taste good together. I also try to keep things in a similar color family.
Otherwise, the final results could turn out unappetizing. Even if it tastes wonderful, if it doesn’t look good, people won’t want to drink it.
Delicious Smoothie with Only a Handful of Ingredients
There aren’t many ingredients in this recipe. In fact, if you like fresh or frozen produce, you might even have most of them on hand.
This lime smoothie has several green colored foods, including the lime juice, avocado, and spinach. You can also add kiwi if you have it. Green smoothies are a great way to stay hydrated through the hot summer months.
My kids also enjoyed them for an after school snack. A smoothie and a couple of cookies made them very happy.
Creamy Lime Smoothie Ingredients
I’ve already mentioned some of the ingredients. Here’s the whole list of what I put in the blender to make the smoothie:
- Lime juice
- Avocado, frozen (secret ingredient that makes it smooth, creamy, and even more nutritious)
- Fresh spinach leaves
- Ripe banana (or frozen banana)
- Plain Greek yogurt (or vanilla yogurt)
- Honey
- Coconut water
- Crushed ice
For exact measurements of each ingredient and full directions, go to the recipe card at the bottom of the page. You can even print out the card by using the “print” button.
I love adding avocado to my smoothies because they add a smooth creaminess to the texture. In fact, I use them every chance I get, especially when I’m making something either green or yellow.
You can use fresh avocado, but I chose to use the frozen version so I wouldn’t have to use as much ice. Unfortunately, too much ice waters down the smoothie, so you won’t get as much flavor.
Another thing you can freeze is the banana. The only bananas I had were in my fruit bowl, so I just pulled out one of those.
I keep plain Greek yogurt in my fridge at all times. It’s a delicious and tart addition to so many things, plus it’s good with a little bit of fruit cut up into it.
My refrigerator crushes ice. If you don’t have an easy way to get crushed ice, just toss in a handful of ice cubes.
Optional Ingredients
You can swap out any of the above ingredients or even add more if you like. Here are some swaps I’ve made:
- Lime juice from a bottle instead of fresh
- Key limes instead of regular lime juice
- Regular yogurt instead of Greek yogurt
- Maple syrup instead of honey
- Unsweetened almond milk instead of coconut water
- Low-fat coconut milk, full-fat coconut milk, or coconut cream
- Kale instead of spinach
You can also add other ingredients instead of swapping them out. Here are some good ones:
- Simple syrup
- Cream cheese
- Cottage cheese
- Vanilla extract
- Cucumbers for a refreshing cucumber lime smoothie
- Kiwi
- Chia seeds
- Protein powder
How to Make a Creamy Lime Smoothie
I try to eat as much nutritious food as possible each day. That’s one of the reasons why I enjoy making smoothies. The other reason is that they’re so easy to make.
All you have to do is toss all of the ingredients into the blender, turn it on, and wait for the magic to happen. Everything gets pulverized and blended together to make a fabulous drink.
I used a NutriBullet that I recently purchased to replace my older version. You can use any blender that has blades sharp enough blades to blend out all of the ingredients.
That’s pretty much all you have to do. After I finished blending the smoothies, I poured them into 2 glasses—one for my husband and one for me.
Then, since I like a little extra tart flavor, I squeezed some more lime into the drink and stuck the wedge onto the edge of the glass.
Optional Garnish
I used the squeezed lime wedge to garnish my smoothies this time. But there are so many things you can do.
Here are some fun and delicious garnish ideas:
- Whipped cream with a cherry on top
- Alternate slices of lemon, lime, and orange
- Graham cracker crumbs around the top – Dip the glass in lime juice and then dip it in the crumbs
- Orange, lemon, or lime zest sprinkled over the top
How to Serve Smoothies
We have a variety of glasses and tumblers for smoothies. One favorite is a mason jar, either with or without a handle.
Another way we enjoy drinking them is from a travel tumbler with a lid and straw. That’s what I use when I take one with me.
When I hang out at home, I often use my favorite clear glasses that show off the pretty lime color. It’s even better when you can see what you’re drinking!
Healthy Treat That Tastes Great
If you’ve been looking for ways to get healthy, then you might want to try making lime smoothies. These yummy drinks are easy to prepare and contain lots of fiber, potassium, vitamin C, and other essential nutrients.
When my girls were growing up, I had a bunch of healthy recipes for after school snacks. And some of them, like this one, were the perfect summer drink or treat when they came in from playing outside.
Smoothies are also the perfect breakfast food when you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to sit down and enjoy a meal. Just make the smoothie, pour it into a to-go cup, and enjoy it during the commute.
This creamy lime smoothie recipe is easy to follow, delicious, and nutritious. In other words, it’s a win-win-win for you and everyone you make them for!
