List of Foods that Start with A

You might not find some of them in grocery stores near you. However, they are available somewhere on the planet. Many of these are popular foods, but others are more obscure. I’ve included a mixture of sweet and savory foods.

Here’s a list of food items that start with the letter A:

alfalfa sprouts

Alfalfa Sprouts

Alfalfa sprouts come from immature shoots of alfalfa seeds. They have vitamin C, which provides antioxidants that fight free radicals.

Alfalfa sprouts also contain vitamin K that helps your body absorb calcium. You can eat them raw or add them to salads, soups, stews, and other favorite dishes..

almond milk

Almond Milk

Almond milk has a flavor that is similar to fat-free cow’s milk, but it is lower in calories. If you have a lactose intolerance or dairy allergy, almond milk is an excellent alternative.

It’s high in vitamin E and is often enriched with vitamin D. Most people who drink almond milk are unable to detect a nutty flavor.

acorn squash

Acorn Squash

Acorn squash is a low calorie food that is rich in nutrients. In addition to having a high amount of fiber, it’s also packed with vitamins A, C, B1, and B6.

The exterior of the acorn squash is tough, but the inside is delicious in a variety of recipes. There are many different ways to eat it, including steamed with butter, salt, and black pepper or with a sweet glaze.

Adzuki Beans

Adzuki beans are popular in Asian cuisine and are used in a variety of dishes in China. These red beans are smaller than American red kidney beans.

They are loaded with fiber, protein, and manganese. They can be sprouted, boiled, or made into a paste. Adzuki beans are often used in desserts as well as many different savory dishes.

One favorite way to eat adzuki (also known as azuki) beans in Japan and other parts of Asia is in desserts. In Hawaii, some of the shave ice contains adjuki in the syrup.

Ackee Apple

The ackee apple is a popular fruit that is often used in Jamaican cuisine. However, unripe ackee is toxic and may cause extreme nausea, vomiting, and in extreme cases, death. The seeds are poisonous.

Almond Joys

The Almond Joy is a popular candy bar made with coconut, almonds, and milk chocolate. They were originally owned by the Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company that sold to the Hershey in the 1980s.

Many home cooks have duplicated this delicious candy bar by combining the same ingredients. You may also see “Almond Joy” cookies, cakes, and pies that offer the same combination of flavors.

apple pie

Apple Pie

There’s nothing that evokes memories of home, hearth, and family in the United States more than apple pie. This delicious dessert is cooked in a variety of ways—all of them delicious. Some households enjoy apple pie often, while others save it for special occasions.

Either tart or sweet apples and flaky crust combination provides the perfect ending to any meal. Or serve it with vanilla ice cream as a sweet treat or afternoon snack to bring smiles to everyone’s face. Some people enjoy it with a slice of American cheese melted over the top.

Different cooks use their own personal favorite key ingredients, with cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.  Other favorite seasonings are cloves, ginger, and cardamom.

Alfredo sauce

Alfredo Sauce

If you enjoy Italian food, you’ve probably had Alfredo sauce. This delicious pasta sauce is a light, creamy color in contrast to a more traditional marinara red sauce.

Traditionally made with a mixture of butter, parmesan cheese, salt, and either heavy cream or pasta water, this is a favorite in Italian restaurants and homes. For a lower fat version, try this Alfredo sauce made with yogurt. It’s absolutely delicious.

American Cheese

American cheese is a processed cheese food that comes either in blocks or pre-sliced for convenience. In some cases, each slice is individually wrapped to make it easy to separate the pieces.

Although some people claim that American cheese isn’t truly cheese, it is a favorite topping for cheeseburgers in the United States. One reason is that it melts easily and adds quite a bit of flavor.

packets of stevia, Sweet n Low, and Splenda

Artificial sweeteners

Those who either shouldn’t or choose not to indulge in sugar may still enjoy a sweet flavor with the use of artificial sweeteners. Some of the most common forms of artificial sweeteners include saccharine, aspartame, and Sucralose.

People who want to lose weight or suffer from blood sugar problems like diabetes may choose artificial sweeteners.

almonds

Almonds

Almonds are tree nuts that contain a boatload of nutrients. They deliver antioxidants, fiber, and quite a few other health benefits.

Although they have high-fat content, it’s mostly monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids that are good for you. The healthy fats in almonds provide energy and help reduce bad cholesterol levels.

Almond tree orchards can be found in California, Arizona, and other areas that have warm summers and mild winters. You can eat this delicious nut raw, roasted, or cooked in many different foods.

Anchovy Pear

The anchovy pear grows on a tree and tastes similar to a mango. This tropical fruit is native to Jamaica but can be grown in other areas with similar climates, such as South America.

You can enjoy slices of the anchovy pear with ice cream, pudding, or all by itself. Some people like to pickle it and use it as a condiment with meats, beans, and vegetables. You can also add it to a citrus fruit salad for a more unique flavor.

anchovies in a can

Anchovy

Anchovies are small fish that are usually found in oceans or seas, but they can also live in brackish water. They have a strong fishy taste. Since they are usually cured in olive oil and salt, they also taste very salty.

The anchovy is one of those savory foods that people have strong feelings about. In other words, you either like them a lot or have an extreme dislike.

Those who enjoy anchovies typically have them in salads, on pizza, in pasta dishes, or in other foods that need more flavor.

Some people like to make an anchovy paste to spread on toast, crackers, or meat. You can eat them right out of the can as well.

Most Asian greens are high in lutein and other nutrients that support the eyes. They are also rich in folate.

Some of the most popular Asian greens are bok chow, Chinese celery, pea shoots, Napa cabbage, Chinese broccoli, and mustard greens.
