Looking for the best classic guacamole dip recipe? This is our absolute favorite, and it’s super easy to make! My husband asks for it often, and I’m always more than happy to make it for him.
Who doesn’t love guacamole? It’s the perfect appetizer or snack for any party or gathering, and you can make it fresh in a matter of minutes.
Your friends and family will think you’re the best cook ever when they taste this delicious dip. It’s also tasty as a condiment on tacos and and other festive dishes. When I make taco soup, I like to include it as something to dip the chips into.

Also Perfect for Mexican or Tex Mex Recipes
Guacamole is a delicious addition to all of your Tex Mex or Mexican recipes. Serve it however you want to. You can add it to the dish or put a little on the side. I even enjoy it with this delicious taco soup that I make in my Instant Pot!
I love the fact that you can start with the basic recipe and then tailor it to your own taste preferences. As I’ve already mentioned, this is my favorite guacamole dip recipe. But I’ve also made this other super easy guacamole many times.
Both of my guacamole dips are big hits with guests. So if I’m serving a large group of people, I’ll make both so there’s a little variety on the snack table. I’ve never had any complaints about doing this, so I’ll continue.
Best Guacamole Recipe Ingredients
You only need a few ingredients for this simple guacamole recipe, and you might even have some on hand. You should be able to find what you need at any grocery store.
Here are the ingredients:
- Ripe avocados
- Cilantro (preferably fresh cilantro)
- Fresh lime juice
- Diced onion (yellow or red onion)
- Minced garlic
- Salt
- Ground cayenne pepper (optional)
Obviously, the main ingredient is avocado. They need to be ripe enough to smush but not so ripe that they have dark spots.
For exact measurements of each ingredient and full directions, go to the recipe card at the bottom of the page. You can even print out the card by using the “print” button.
You can add other ingredients if you want more or different flavor. Here are some I’ve tried and liked:

- Onion powder
- Garlic powder
- Tomatoes
- Bell peppers
- Seasoned salt
How to Make Guacamole Dip
Cut the avocados into halves and remove the pit. Next, scoop out the flesh and cut it into strips or bite-size pieces so they fit in your food processor.
Combine the avocados with cilantro, diced onion, minced garlic, lime juice, and salt in the bowl of a food processor.
If you want a little extra heat, add the cayenne pepper. Start out pulsing the food processor until the pieces are small and uniform in size. Then turn it on and keep it running until it has a smooth consistency. This should only take a minute or two.
How to Serve Guacamole Dip
There are so many different ways to serve guacamole. I like a dollop of it on salads, tacos, and burritos. I’ve even added some to enchiladas. The classic way to enjoy guacamole is with your favorite tortilla chips. It’s also delicious on vegetables and crackers.
When you serve it, offer a variety of things to use for dipping. Everyone will think you’re a kitchen star!
How Long Does Guacamole Last?
Don’t be surprised if the guacamole is the first thing to disappear from the appetizer table. However, if there is any left, you need to cover it or put it in an airtight container and put it in the refrigerator right away. Remember that once the air hits the avocado, it will start to turn brown. That’s why I typically make it in smaller batches. I rarely have leftover guacamole.
What Kind of Avocados Should You Use for Guacamole?
You can use any type of avocados. But my favorite is the Haas avocado because it has just the right amount of flavor for the dip. The key in choosing your avocado for guacamole is to make sure it’s ripe. If it isn’t, it won’t mash very easily, and you might wind up with large chunks in the dip.
How Are Avocados Good for You?
You’ll be happy to know that avocados are loaded with nutrition. In addition to being delicious and versatile, they contain nutrients that are good for your heart, vision, and bones. They are also packed with fiber to keep your digestive tract in good condition.
